LONDON, October 9, 2011 – WorldSkills London was held from October 5-8, with over 950 participants from 51 countries competing in 46 different skill categories. The event demonstrated excellence in vocational training, as some of the most talented youth from around the world competed for the coveted gold medal in their respective skill.
As a Global Industry Partner of WorldSkills International, and official sponsor of WorldSkills London, Lincoln Electric was the exclusive provider of equipment, consumables and fume extraction for the welding competition. These products were also utilized in the Manufacturing Team Challenge, Sheet Metal Technology and Construction Metal Work competitions.
After four intense days of competition, the medalists were announced during the Closing Ceremony at The O2 Arena. For the welding portion, Hyeon Woo Kim of Korea led the way with a cumulative score of 540 points across the various tasks. This continued a strong tradition of success for Korea, as they have won four gold medals in this skill category since 2000. See the chart below for a complete list of results from the welding competition.
Fuente: The Competition had a significant impact on local schools and colleges, with large groups from throughout London testing their skills with the “Have a Go” activities and Contact areas. Lincoln had a strong presence at these locations, including a booth where attendees could get a hands-on demonstration of the Company’s Robotic Education Welding Cell and VRTEX® 360 virtual reality arc welding trainer.
WorldSkills London 2011 provided a great opportunity for Industry, Education & Training representatives as well as Government bodies to network. On Thursday, Oct. 6 a Leaders Forum took place, with speakers from around the globe focusing on the impact that vocational training has on economic growth.
“One of the most impressive parts of WorldSkills London was the open dialogue between the countries. Individuals came together for a common purpose of exchanging their experiences and best practices. There was a shared passion for quality training and vocational education programs,” notes Carl Peters, Lincoln Electric’s Director of Technical Training.
“Since WorldSkills competitions are ongoing, it provides a sustainable platform for us to promote our trade. The organization is forward-thinking, and the planning for the 2013 and 2015 competitions are already under way. WorldSkills does a great job coordinating these events.”
